Casa Gecko, Italy

Location

Casa Gecko is a small residence in Andagna in the west of Liguria, Italy. A very quiet mediaeval village in a beautiful valley, it is about 35 minutes drive from the coast and well off the usual tourist trail, With a small cafe/restaurant and impressive views there are endless opportunities for walking, exploring and cycling. If all that isolation and beauty is too much for you, then the French and Italian Rivieras are not too far away and you won't have to drive for too long to feel back in the thick of it.

(The panorama at the top of this page was taken from our balcony)

The Argentine Valley

The Argentine (Silver) valley runs to the coast from the Alpine village of Verdeggia, about 30 minutes drive from Andagna. The small village of Molini di Triora, around 5 minutes drive down the hill from our place offers a cafes, a restaurant, some local shops and importantly during the summer, fantastic (but cold !) swimming in the river. Apart from its natural beauty, the area's claim to fame is that it was the last location in Europe that saw women tried for Witchcraft from the villages of Triora and Andagna in 1588.

The Villages

There are endless villages and natural features to explore in the Argentine valley itself as it runs to the coast. The main village in the valley is Triora which has a number of restaurants and a few small bars in spectacular settings for a relaxing coffee or wine.

The villages, large and small all have their own particular style and very often their own culinary specialty that is celebrated each year during their local "Festa". Keep an eye out for the posters advertising these on the drive up the valley, as they range from mushrooms to trout and snails to chestnuts, often attracting large crowds from the coast.

The Coast

Around a 40 (to San Remo) to 90 (to Nice) minute drive from Andagna you will find the many towns considered of the Italian and French Rivieras.  Interesting architecture, shopping, beaches and conspicuous consumption are all on display and there are some great places to visit. We have plenty of tips on what to see

Over the years, mainly during longer stays we have travelled from Andagna to Venice, Spain, the Italian Lakes, the UK (flying from Nice) and numerous locations in the South of France for a week or so before returning 'home'. It is about a 30 minute drive to the motorway which gets you around surprisingly quickly.

The House

"Small but perfectly formed"....at around 50m2, with two bedrooms, a bathroom with tiny bath under the shower, a combined kitchen/living area and a balcony. Public parking is nearby and like most houses in the area, it is accessible via a maze of narrow walkways.
There is a queen bed (new in 2017) in one bedroom and triple bunks (also new on 2017) in the other. With fridge, washing machine and gas/electric kitchen. Everything is there and waiting for you to stay as long as you wish.

Living Area

A single kitchen/living area with two small lounges, and a table that can extend to seat 6 people. Plus TV/DVD

Kitchen

A kitchen runs down one side of the wall with a gas cook top and electric oven.

There is also a washing machine (new in 2018) and full size fridge.

Bedroom 1

Queen size bed, wardrobe and a set of drawers. The travel cot if required can fit at the end of the bed

Bedroom 2

A triple bunk, designed and built by international master craftsman and carpenter Roger Mills in 2017 from two sets of IKEA bunks provides a comfortable sleeping space in the bedroom at the front.

Connectivity & ATMs

Access to the internet is usually available for free in most cafe's and free (but slow) connections are often available in villages and towns where they are supported by the local council. Andagna, despite its relatively isolated location, has good connectivity with all the main Italian phone companies. For simplicity, see if your current mobile service provider offers reasonable rates or packages for Italy so you can just use your own phone and number. Buying a sim card in Italy requires ID and it may take a few days before it is registered and you are able to use it. Invariably, this has been harder than it looks unless your Italian is pretty good to understand how to put credit on it etc. Alternately get a prepaid/travel sim card before you go.

The nearest ATM to Andagna is in Molini di Triora, in the entrance to the Municipio (Council Office) that is  on a corner on the main road through the village, about 5 minutes drive from Andagna. Easy enough to take cash from your credit card (which of course can be in credit) however I have taken to using a travel card from the NAB (their is linked with Mastercard). Most banks offer something similar.

Useful Links

Finally please see a few useful and interesting links below. Mountain Biking is very popular in the valley and there are number of businesses that are based in Molini di Triora that run various tours. For those less adventurous the coastal bike bath is well worth a look, Bikes can be hired at Arma di Taggia and San Remo (plus I am sure various other locations) and there are 2 basic but functional mountain bikes in the basement of the house. as well as a bike rack that fits to most hatchback style cars.
